IMDG Amendment 40-20

The IMO (International Maritime Organization) has published Amendment 40-20 of the IMDG Code (International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code), containing numerous changes.

This amendment harmonized with the 21st edition of the UN Model Regulations (UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods).

The following notes are a simple overview of the newly introduced changes and are not a complete list of amendments. Please refer to the official text of Amendment 40-20 for full details and clarification about applicable requirements.

Minor edits to the Classification provisions in Part 2, mainly about text form
Minor edits to the Special provisions, including a new SP399 applicable to DETONATORS, ELECTRONIC, mainly about the used naming system
Minor changes to the DGL to reflect the addition of SP399, and deletion of SW1 from UN 1056, mainly changes of names and definitions
New 4.1.2.2 (the two articles 4.1.2.2.1 and 4.1.2.2.2 are now one article)
Minor edits to packing instructions P802, IBC08, LP622, and LP906, mainly changes of names and definitions
Change to the dangerous goods description examples in 5.4.1.4.4, specifically about the positioning of brackets and commas
Clarification to the wording for segregation concerning foodstuffs in 7.2.6.2 by adding a reference to the specific segregation groups applicable
Update of the competent authority details for France, Germany, and Spain in 7.9.3

Full compliance with Amendment 40-20 has been mandatory since 1st June 2022.
